VENEZUELA: Chávez gives Mercosur an ultimatum

The Venezuelan President, Hugo Chávez , gave a deadline to the congresses of Brazil and Paraguay to approve Venezuela's entry into the Mercosur. In a televised address on 3 July Chávez declared Venezuela "will wait until September. We will not wait any more because there is no political or moral reason why the congresses of Brazil and Paraguay do not approve our entry. If they do not, then we will withdraw". Venezuela's accession in the bloc was agreed last July and was already ratified by the congresses of Argentina and Uruguay, the two other Mercosur founding members.
